Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion

Introduction

The Municipality of Meaford is planning for the future expansion of its wastewater treatment plant to ensure the community has the infrastructure needed to support future growth and development.

The wastewater treatment plant has experienced increased flows in recent years, and anticipated development is expected to place additional demands on the facility. In response, the Municipality initiated a planning process to assess future wastewater treatment capacity requirements and determine the appropriate approach to meet the community’s long-term needs.

Project Description

Environmental Assessment

As the first major step in the project, the Municipality completed an addendum to the 2007 Environmental Assessment (EA), which was finalized in 2024.

The EA addendum examined the Municipality’s future wastewater servicing needs, anticipated growth, potential alternatives, and environmental considerations associated with addressing the plant’s long-term capacity requirements.

The completed EA provides an important foundation for future planning and decision-making related to the wastewater treatment plant.

Reviewing Wastewater Flows

Since the project was initially initiated, wastewater flows to the treatment plant have decreased. In light of this change, the Municipality is undertaking an additional review of current wastewater flows and updated flow projections.

The purpose of this review is to further confirm the plant’s capacity requirements and, in particular, the appropriate timing for any future expansion.

This additional review will allow the Municipality to consider current conditions alongside anticipated development and updated flow information before determining when additional treatment capacity will be required.

What This Means for the Project

The Municipality remains committed to ensuring that adequate wastewater treatment capacity is available to support the community over the long term.

The current flow review is intended to ensure that infrastructure investments are appropriately timed and based on the most up-to-date information available. The review will help confirm whether, and when, additional capacity will be required as the community grows.

The Municipality will use the results of the flow review, together with the findings of the 2024 Environmental Assessment and updated development projections, to inform the next steps for the project.

Additional Information

Next Steps

The Municipality will complete the updated review of wastewater flows and projected capacity requirements. Once the review is complete, the Municipality will be better positioned to confirm the timing and requirements for a future wastewater treatment plant expansion.

Updates will be provided on this webpage as the project progresses.
