Low Class Bituminous (LCB) or tar-and-chip is constructed by spraying a layer of emulsified asphalt and placing a layer of aggregate on top. This process helps seal the roadway, protect the base layers from extreme failure, and ultimately extend the life of the road surface. Tar-and-chip resurfacing is typically applied to existing tar-and-chip roadways (surface treated).
Micro Resurfacing involves the uniform placement of a mixture of asphalt emulsion and aggregate on top of an existing asphalt surface. This process is to ensure that the driving portion of the road remains sealed, protecting the base layers and increasing the life of the asset. Micro surfacing is typically applied to existing asphalt roadways.
High Class Bituminous (HCB) resurfacing or shave-and-pave involves removal of the top layer of asphalt to a depth of 40 to 50mm, which exposes the base asphalt and then repaving the top layer of asphalt. This process removes the top surface cracking and seals the road to protect the road base layers and to increase the life expectancy of this asset.
