Can you believe we have just half of this long awaited summer left to enjoy! It is great to see more restrictions loosening for shopping, indoor as well as outdoor dining, exercising and personal care settings all of which provide a resemblance to “normal” summer activity. Thankfully the uptick at many hub and pop-up vaccination clinics and the Health Unit’s excellent control of the current case contacts have allowed us to settle in to a modified Step 3 of the provincial Roadmap to recovery which means private and social gatherings should still be restricted to 5 people indoors, 25 outdoors.

Mid-summer welcomes great local farm produce and goods available at farm stores or at several local markets, including the BIA market downtown on Friday afternoons where the return of live music from local artists will enhance your visit.

Municipal facilities are open for public booking and use. Our Museum staff are so excited to welcome you back to explore our local history. Plans are underway to have live shows at Meaford Hall for this September in the only fully functioning Opera house in Southern Georgian Bay, and the galleries are open and welcome visitors to view the work of local artists. The brand new Meaford Public Library is welcoming guests and book lovers back with lots of fun activities all summer long, and the staff encourage folks to pick-up a book to enjoy perhaps outside in their garden courtyard that has been made comfy with red Muskoka Chairs and even a fireplace! Meaford is truly a magical place especially in the summer.

However, we are not out of the woods yet when it comes to Covid-19. The Delta variant is here in Grey Bruce, and the current rise in cases has shown how extremely efficient and effective it is at transmitting, and at causing severe disease leading to hospitalizations and deaths. We know that 99 per cent of these cases appear in those who have not received the vaccination. The only way to defeat this virus is to get as many people vaccinated as possible. The goal post to achieve that “herd immunity”, has advanced to having 90 per cent of the eligible population, vaccinated. The target right now is to reach those between the ages of 12-40. Please encourage your young people, friends and neighbours to get their first and second shots and continue to follow the proven protocols of social distancing and washing hands. Vaccination drop-in clinics are currently planned in August. Please visit the Grey Bruce Health Unit website for more details on dates and locations.

Whether it’s camping, hiking, swimming, boating, visiting friends and family, shopping, dining out, or whatever makes summer so meaningful for you, please enjoy, but play safely and stay well everyone.
