The Meaford Bread Wagon "rises" again! In honour of the town of Meaford’s 150th year, the historic Meaford City Bakery Wagon, first driven by Norman Wells in 1925, has been beautifully restored.

The hard work and attention to detail of Gregor Black from Bognor is greatly appreciated. This cherished piece of Meaford's heritage is now proudly displayed by the main steps of Meaford Hall.

Special thanks to Susan Taylor and Liz Harris for their inspired discovery of the wagon, enriching our town's connection to its past with stories and photos.

History

In the early 20th century Meaford, horse-drawn wagons delivered essential goods such as bread, milk, and ice. They remained in use even into the 1920s and 30s due to poor road conditions, with the last horse-drawn bread wagon retiring in 1942. In 1965, the remaining wagon was refurbished for Canada's Centennial in 1967 and the town of Meaford's centennial in 1974. Gregor Black acquired it in 1993 and restored it in time for a great reveal at the 150th celebrations in June 2024.
