From May 28 through to June 3, the Municipality of Meaford will be marking National AccessAbility Week. This is a week dedicated to the celebration and inclusion of people of all abilities.

The Municipality invites everyone to participate. The week’s events will be kicked off by flying the Municipality’s accessibility flag on May 29, 2023, at the downtown Market Square flag poles. Each night for the remainder of the week, the water tower will be lit up in blue and yellow in recognition of accessibility as well.

On Tuesday, May 30 at 1 pm, yoga instructor Paula Stepan will be leading a chair yoga class at the Meaford and St. Vincent Community Centre. Chair yoga has many benefits, including building strength and feelings of confidence. The class is being offered at no cost and persons of all abilities are welcome, but pre-registration is required as space is limited. Click here to register.

On Wednesday, May 31 it is Red Shirt Day of Action for AccessAbility and Inclusion. It is a day when people across Canada come together and wear red to create a visible display of solidarity: to show their support for disabled people and their families, celebrate the achievements of disabled Canadians, and to pledge their commitment to help create a fully accessible and inclusive society. Red Shirt Day is an Easter Seals initiative and was first celebrated in 2019. It takes place on the Wednesday of National AccessAbility Week each year.

On Thursday, June 1, in honour of AccessAbility week, we will be showcasing a documentary at the Meaford Public Library at 2 pm in the FOML room. Refreshments will be provided. With the Wind and Wave by Anne-Marie Rocher is an inspiring documentary that celebrates determination and strength of character in the face of disability. The film presents two friends who are visually impaired and who also share a life-long passion for sports. The film will show their mettle and commitment during their training in Toronto and accompany them on a joyous and extended bicycle trip across the beautiful Georgian Bay landscape, including right here in Meaford. Space is limited, so please register for the event here.
