The Municipality of Meaford Recognizes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Today, the Municipality of Meaford recognizes National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day of reflection and commitment toward a shared future rooted in understanding and respect for Indigenous communities.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was selected to coincide with the Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led grassroots initiative to commemorate and honour both the children who survived Indian Residential Schools and remember those who did not.

In recognition of this day, the Municipality of Meaford will be lighting up the water tower in orange, symbolizing the significance of Truth and Reconciliation. In addition, the Every Child Matters Flag will be flown at Meaford Hall to honor those affected by residential schools, and the flag at the Municipal Office will be lowered to half-mast in solemn remembrance.

Local Events and Observances:

  • 8:00 AM - A Sunrise Ceremony at the Gichi-Name Wikwedong Reconciliation Garden in Owen Sound (808 2nd Ave W, Owen Sound)
  • 10:00 AM - Ceremonial walk at Saugeen First Nation, beginning at the James Mason Memorial Centre (47 French Bay Rd, Southampton).
  • 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM - Voices of the Children ceremony at the Gichi-Name Wiikwedong Reconciliation Garden, featuring songs, stories, and teachings.
  • 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM - Ceremonies and activities at the James Mason Memorial Culture & Recreation Centre, hosted by the Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation, with a Sacred Fire from 12:00 - 7:00 PM.
  • 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM - Activities at Cape Croker Park (112 Park Rd, Wiarton), hosted by the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, including a Reconciliation Walk at 3:30 PM, language and culture activities, and live music.

Mayor Kentner encourages all residents to participate in these or other events taking place in our region and to reflect on the shared journey toward reconciliation:
