The Meaford Public Library invites the community to the first event in Hamlet Tales: Authors Among Us, featuring Gwen Lamont and her memoir The View from Coffin Ridge: A Childhood Exhumed on Thursday, June 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Historic Leith Church. The series celebrates local voices and the stories that connect Meaford’s communities, as part of the Municipality of Meaford’s 25th Anniversary of Amalgamation.
Despite leaving school before completing grade nine, Lamont went on to earn a BA in Sociology, a BSW, an MSW, and an MFA in Creative Non-fiction, graduating summa cum laude and receiving two academic awards for scholarship. Her graduate research, The Subjective Experience of Men Who Murdered Their Intimate Partners, involved extensive prison interviews and years of qualitative analysis.
The View From Coffin Ridge: A Childhood Exhumed is a memoir about what happens when we are forced to reconcile ourselves with a long-forgotten past and the characters who shaped it. It is also about family secrets and memory and how, by breaking her promises and revealing her secrets, she was able to face the truth about her life and write her young self home.Ms. Lorri Neilsen Glenn, one of Lamont’s professors from the University of King’s College, Halifax, noted, “The View From Coffin Ridge: A Childhood Exhumed is a one-of-a-kind story, and Gwen’s fresh and distinctive voice makes it even more compelling. I predict this book will be one of the strongest to come out of the MFA program to date.”
