Meaford Completes Commemorative Veterans Crosswalk Ahead of National Veterans’ Week and Remembrance Day

The Municipality of Meaford completed its commemorative veterans crosswalk on October 28, 2026, on the west side of the intersection of Sykes Street and Nelson Street West, ahead of National Veterans’ Week, November 5 to 11, and Remembrance Day on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. The crosswalk honours those who served and sacrificed and brings a message of remembrance into the community’s everyday life.

“I am delighted to see this commemorative crosswalk installed at a key intersection in our municipality,” said Mayor Ross Kentner. “It offers residents and visitors an opportunity to pause, reflect and remember the sacrifices of our veterans. As we mark National Veterans’ Week and Remembrance Day, this tribute reminds us to honour those who served and sacrificed.”

Crosswalk Dedication

The crosswalk’s dedication appears in English and French, carrying the message “In honour of those who served and sacrificed,” “En hommage à ceux et celles qui ont servi et se sont sacrifiés.”

Council approved the crosswalk’s installation and design in July  2026. The design was provided by Royal Canadian Legion Command.

In response to Council’s request for information on potential locations, design and sponsorship opportunities, municipal staff consulted members of Branch 32 of the Royal Canadian Legion about the proposed location, design and funding. Staff and Legion members recommended the west side of the intersection of Nelson Street West and Sykes Street as the location for the commemorative crosswalk, close to the Cenotaph. The Municipality thanks Royal Canadian Legion Branch 32 for funding the initial installation of the commemorative crosswalk.

Remembrance Day Observance

Alongside this new tribute, the Municipality will observe Remembrance Day on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. Residents are invited to come together to remember those who served and sacrificed and to recognize veterans and active service members.

This year also marks the 100th anniversary of The Royal Canadian Legion. Since its official incorporation in 1926, the Legion has stood with Veterans, honoured the Fallen, and strengthened communities across Canada, a century of service that continues through the dedication of members and branches, including Meaford Branch 32.

The Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremony, hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion (Meaford Branch 32), will bring together local veterans, cadets, military personnel and residents in remembrance.

  • 10:30 a.m.: Parade begins (Collingwood Street West to Sykes Street North)
  • 11:00 a.m.: Ceremony at the Cenotaph (in front of Meaford Hall on Sykes St. N.)
  • After Parade Reception: Light refreshments at Meaford and St. Vincent Community Centre for all who wish to attend
